The situation

What has happened

It is Friday night at the district headquarters custody facility. One person is already in custody awaiting interview after a lawyer was contacted. During your shift two further people are brought in: a man arrested for assault who is intoxicated and has a cut to his hand, and a 17 year old girl arrested on a warrant who says she takes medication for anxiety. The sergeant is dealing with a disturbance at the front counter and has told you to complete the reception assessments and set the welfare check intervals. You have the Custody Management Procedure, the intake form and the Custody Register.

Your brief. Receive the two new persons into custody, complete a full intake and welfare assessment for each, set the correct welfare check interval, make the required notifications, record checks accurately in the Custody Register and escalate any risk indicator to the sergeant.

What to look for

Evidence guide

Look for every intake question answered, the fifteen minute interval selected for both persons, the independent person and medical referral recorded with times, and welfare checks that are physical observations recorded at the time. The handover note must escalate rather than minimise risk. The unresponsive person response must follow the procedure: assistance, call for help, notify the sergeant, record.

The student's evidence summary lists every record they created or changed in the systems named above, their notes and the tasks they ticked. Verify it against the deliverables and your own assessment tool.
